Monit

Financial intelligence for small businesses and the banks that serve them

Monit is a fintech platform that helps small businesses better understand their financial health while giving banks deeper insight into the businesses they serve.

As Monit's sole product designer, I led design across the platform—from research and onboarding to new product development, banking integrations, and go-to-market experiences.

THE ECOSYSTEM

Designing for both sides of the banking relationship

Monit served two interconnected users: small business owners who needed a simpler way to understand their finances, and bankers who needed better visibility into their business customers.

This meant designing an ecosystem that could turn complex financial data into useful information for two very different audiences.

Small Businesses

Understand cash flow, performance, and financial health.

Bankers

Understand customers, identify opportunities, and prioritize outreach.

Previous Onboarding Experience

01 — IMPROVING ONBOARDING

Helping more users reach the value of Monit

Monit's SMB experience relied on users connecting their accounting data, but analytics and session recordings showed that many were leaving before completing onboarding.

Research revealed that users didn't fully understand the value of connecting their data, weren't sure how long onboarding would take, and were being asked for information that wasn't always necessary.

What we learned

Value wasn't clear
Users were asked for sensitive information before understanding what they would receive.

Too much friction
The process felt longer and more complicated than expected.

Connection issues
Users couldn't always find their accounting provider.

I explored ways to communicate Monit's value earlier, reduce unnecessary steps, and give users clearer expectations before asking them to connect their financial data.

The final experience introduced the value of Monit before asking users to commit, simplified account creation, reduced unnecessary questions, and made progress through onboarding easier to understand.

02 — RETHINKING THE PRODUCT

What if users didn't need to onboard at all?

Improving onboarding reduced friction, but it also led to a bigger product question.

Our engineers discovered that Monit could generate many of the same insights using bank transaction data already available to our financial institution partners—removing the dependency on SMBs connecting an accounting platform altogether.

That opportunity became Monicore.

DEFINING MONICORE

Turning transaction data into something bankers could use

The technology could generate financial insights, but we still needed to determine which information mattered to bankers and how it could support their day-to-day work.

Working closely with engineering, leadership, and banking stakeholders, I helped define the product around three core experiences.

Dashboard

Understand what's happening across the portfolio.

Opportunities

Identify businesses worth paying attention to.

Customer Profiles

Understand the financial story behind an individual business.

FROM DATA TO ACTION

Helping bankers understand what to do next

Early concepts focused on giving bankers access to financial metrics and insights. But simply presenting more data still required bankers to determine what mattered.

This led to Opportunities—a more actionable experience that surfaced businesses based on meaningful financial signals and gave bankers a clearer starting point for outreach.

THE FINAL EXPERIENCE

A clearer way to understand and act on financial data

Portfolio Dashboard

A high-level view of the bank's business customers and financial activity.

Opportunities - Insights & Actions

Surfaces businesses showing meaningful financial signals and helps bankers prioritize outreach.

Customer Profiles

Brings financial insights together to help bankers understand what's happening within an individual business.

03 — DESIGNING FOR BANKS

One product, many banking experiences

Monit didn't always exist as a standalone product. It was often embedded directly within a bank's existing digital experience.

I designed Monit across platforms including Q2, Jack Henry Banno, and Apiture, balancing the consistency of the core product with the technical and visual requirements of each banking partner.

FULLY EMBEDDED

Bringing the complete Monit experience into banking platforms.

COMPOSABLE

Turning Monit insights into smaller modules that could live directly within a bank dashboard.

CUSTOM

Adapting the experience for individual banking partners and their existing products.

Designing across these environments taught me how to maintain a consistent product experience while allowing the system to flex around different platforms, users, and technical constraints.

04 — BEYOND THE PRODUCT

Bringing the new Monit story to market

As Monit's product offering evolved, its marketing experience needed to evolve with it.

I worked with leadership and sales to reposition the site around our banking audience, redesigned the experience in Figma, created supporting product visuals and media, and ultimately brought the final experience into Webflow.

IMPACT

Four years of evolving one product ecosystem

Over four years at Monit, my role grew alongside the product. What began as designing financial tools for small businesses expanded into building banker-facing intelligence, developing an entirely new transaction-data product, supporting enterprise banking integrations, and shaping how the company presented its products to the market.

Working as the sole designer gave me ownership across the full product lifecycle and taught me how to move between research, strategy, systems thinking, and detailed execution.

REFLECTION

What I learned

Monit taught me that designing complex products isn't just about simplifying interfaces—it's about understanding which problems are worth solving in the first place.

Working across users, engineers, banking partners, and business needs pushed me to think beyond individual screens and consider how products evolve as technology, customer needs, and company strategy change.
